Collab & Comms
While growing up, the habit of “seek first to understand...” was ingrained in me. Design is a team sport. Collaboration is paramount. I actively work at providing a high quality collaboration experience.
The second part of Stephen Covey’s habit “...then to be understood.” is the ability to communicate effectively. Articulating and communicating thoughts precisely is critical for collaboration. A distinct advantage I have is the use of visuals.
“I can’t tell you how many times I talked about a need and how you addressed it. You did great work for us!” — PO
“You were easy to work with.” — PO
02
Idea Extraction
When you were young, remember having an idea you drew? The drawing rarely embodied the grandeur in your minds-eye. In fact, it often disappointed.
As a young artist, I improved this process. As a professional, I learned how to be the hand of others’ minds-eye.
I’ve been lucky to get a lot of practice. As a result, I’ve improved my ability to help clients articulate and visualize the vision in their minds-eye.
“It was impossible to decide what I wanted until I saw that.” — PO
03
Visualization Skills
I have a knack for articulating and visualizing my thoughts.
Visualizing someone else’s thoughts is harder. Over the years, leaders have entrusted me with this task — varying from abstract ideas to concrete, tactical ideas.
“It was impossible to decide what I wanted until I saw that.” — PO
04
Moving Forward in the Dark
I thrive in ambiguous environments. I have a knack for gaining traction with open-ended, unstructured problems — “wicked problems” in design speak.
Collaboration and visualization has proven to jar clients loose and spur momentum.
“Without you we would have only made 50% of the progress improving the workflows and reducing the system complexity.” — PO
“There are a lot of scope constraints we are boxed in by and I could not have imagined we would get this far on this project without you.” — PO
05
Integrity
Simply, I prefer to work with people of energy, intelligence, and integrity. I hold myself to the same standard.
“Appreciate your hard work and your commitment to making this successful. I know things come up and it speaks volumes that you are holding up to your word.” — Founder
“I can’t speak highly enough about what you’ve done. Thanks again man, really thankful to be working with you.” — Founder
06
Patience
The clouds don’t part and deliver the answer. Consistent, incremental progress leads to small discoveries that compound to move the needle.
"You have the patience of a stone." — Dad
“Part of what we had to work so hard on with the workflows was making sure that we considered all of the different user groups so we didn’t have to build unique workflows for each group like we did before.” — PO
07
Open Mindedness
The goal is to design the best solution. Open-mindedness, thoughtful discussion, and experimentation are necessary in this pursuit.
Collaborating with others in a trusted environment that fosters open-mindedness is the only effective way to achieve ambitious goals.
“as we reach the end of this stage I just have to officially thank you for the work you have done on this project and how you have managed to both guide us and accept our feedback to get these workflows to where they need to be.”” — PO
