General
Numerica offers enabling tech: distributed tracking + sensor fusion is one. They use that tech in their C2 solution: MIMIR.
This project encompassed two interconnected systems: MIMIR, a holistic C2 and sensor management platform, and FrankenSAM, a custom implementation of MIMIR designed for the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The tools aimed to provide warfighters and engineers with the capabilities to manage diverse sensors, correlate data, and engage targets with precision.
Process
Optimizing usability for macro status, maximum coverage, data accuracy, and uptime.
The process was catered to accommodate an existing feature-set. We began by studying operator needs and current system capabilities. Then begin the refinement process.
UX Activities:
- Research: Studied existing tools and user workflows to identify key pain points.
- Data Accounting: Conducted data accounting to map out the structure and flow of information.
- Information Architecture: Categorized, organized, and prioritized data from extensive documentation and user feedback.
- Design Framework: Establish a cohesive yet flexible design framework to plug in various UI components.
- Visual Design: Designed each sub-system: Asset Detail panels, engagement panels, Map controls, Camera Controls.
- Macro and Micro Interactions: Defined screen-to-screen navigation and detailed widget behaviors.
- Standardized Widgets: Created a widget matrix to standardize reusable UI elements.
- Collaboration: Collaborated weekly with SMEs and technical teams to refine designs and align priorities.
- Kinematic SVG Development: Delivered 9 custom SVG assets for kinematic data visualization.
- UX Consulting: Advocated for simplicity by distilling complex requirements into actionable designs.
Solution
A nested system of systems capable of expanding flexibly.
We had a lot of ground to cover in a short time. Our PO and PM were great guides as we redesigned the system. We iterated extensively based on stakeholder and SME feedback to refine solutions.
We experienced success in these categories:
- Designed for Generalization: Create tools flexible enough to accommodate diverse sensors and effectors.
- Visualized Complex Data: Develop bespoke data visualizations for heavy data loads and conflicting datasets.
- Balanced User Levels: Address the needs of novice and expert users through progressive disclosure and adaptive interfaces.
- Enhanced User Customization: Provide features that allow users to configure their workspaces for optimal efficiency.
- Developed Modular Components: Designed tools that enable a la carte feature sales and custom theming for client branding.
Results
Well received by client, trainees, and prime contractor.
Candidly, this was a challenging, fast-paced, feature-rich, enjoyable project. The design was well-received by the client, prime contractor, and validated through user testing.
It provided a scalable framework for future development and customization.
