Overview

This tool helps agronomists know which hybrids perform best where.

This project involved designing a Hybrid Analysis Tool to help agronomists recommend the best seeds for growers. A partnership between a leading tractor manufacturer and a chemical producer.

The tool visualizes seed performance based on key variables such as soil type, population density, terrain, and application budget. Ultimately, simplifying the complex decision-making process.

Problem

Seed hybrids offer trade-offs. Agronomists learn growers' goals then offer hybrids to meet them.

Agronomists are tasked with recommending optimal seeds to growers.
The number of seeds and performance variables has increased, making decisions more complex.
Each seed offers unique trade-offs based on factors like soil, terrain, yield goals, and budget.
Design a tool immediately inuitive and valuable to agronomists.
Design a tool that can handle additional complexity of sophisticated agronomists.

Solution

The web tool became a data viz analytics tool. The tablet app was an input tool.

Seed Visualization: A tool that allows agronomists to sort, graph, and visualize seed performance across key variables: primarily soil type, population density, and terrain.
Sister Tool for Soil Sampling: A companion tool optimized for tablet use, enabling soil samplers to extract and log soil core data for lab analysis.

Outcome

Well received by client.

Candidly, this was a nice data viz tool — many gantt charts — with a tablet input companion app.

My Roles

These UX roles were typical for me at that time.

Design Lead: Directed the overall UX of this tool and it's companion app.
Information Architect: Organized workflows and data to streamline task management.
Interaction Design: Designed intuitive interfaces for data sorting, graphing, and visualization.
Visual Designer: Delivered simple, clean, user-friendly layouts tailored for agronomists.
Data Visualization: Created interactive visualizations, including a patented soil triangle infographic.
UX Consultant: Collaborated with developers and stakeholders to ensure a seamless user experience.
